This is what they said about the

2008 Ohio Veteran Barbecue Cook-Off

Chad H. (Moonswiners):

“I'd have to say that this was the "coolest" contest for middle of July! Extremely shady and comfortable amongst all the trees! Awesome site for this contest! The contest was a very well oiled machine. Jim and Jimmy and all of their volunteers did a hell of a job. For those of you who had thought about going, but didn't, your loss. I'll be back next year for sure! The American Legion was very hospitable to us. The spaghetti dinner on Thursday, fish fry on Friday, and breakfast on Saturday certainly hit the spot!"

Joe A.  (Smoky Mountain Smokers)

“It was a great run contest and a very cool area to set up in. We never used the fan. Thanks Jim and Jimmy.”

Steve C. (ZZ Que)

“The Kettering event is a go to for sure next year! Get there early folks, this is a great contest. The two Jims, the campus, and the Vets will make this event a bookmark. Kettering will be the premier event in Ohio from now on due to Jim and Jimmy, and all of the wonderful Vets at the American Legion Post 598.”

Dennis H. (Scramblin Eggs BBQ)

“Fantastic comp once again. I suspect some organizers have growing pains when a comp grows like this one did. These two guys worked their hind ends off on this one and it showed. Great work. Awesome trophies too. I told my wife that I'd rather have the 2nd through 5th place awards than the first.....and I got my wish LOL Dog tags with your place and contest/year engraved. Awesome awards for the 2008 Ohio Veteran BBQ Cook off and appropriate too. Kudos to Jim Weaver for that idea. Great KCBS reps too. Super nice folks. Got to meet some great folks again. Fantastic time.”

Dale P. (Perry Brothers BBQ)

“What a great comp that we plan on attending again. Congrats to all who got a call and a big congrats to Mike on the Grand. What a great group of cooks, organizers, and the Legions members were very, very nice to us. Thanks to the twin Jims for making us feel at home even though we cant understand their language up there to good, and we were not used to seeing so many people with shoes on before.”

Jeff T. (Snake Pit BBQ)

“We just got back from Kettering. Had a great time didn't cook but went to cheer on fellow cooking teams. Jim Ferguson and Jim Weaver put together one Hell of a great contest! Can't wait tell next year.”

Dallas P. (Double D’s BBQ)

“I just got back from the Kettering contest. This was the first year that the contest was sanctioned. Phil and Kathy Brazier were the KCBS reps for the contest and did a fantastic job. Jim Ferguson and Jim Weaver did an incredible job promoting the contest and wound up with 39 teams with some of the best teams in the country in attendance with Moonswiners, CancerSucksChigago.com, Smoky Mountain Smokers, Great Lakes BBQ & Feed Co., Shigs In Pits and many, many others. The contest was held at the Kettering American Legion Hall. It was a beautiful park like setting, plenty of trees, great facilities, including a Friday Night Fish Fry and a Saturday morning breakfast for the cooks. As a Veteran myself, I couldn't help but get a lump in my throat as the legion members led each day off with the Pledge of Allegiance and a salute to fallen veterans with the playing of taps and an 18 gun salute. A $5000 check was given to the American Legion by one of the sponsors of the contest Belmont Party Supply.”

“Mike took home one of the most beautiful trophies I've ever seen given at a contest.”

“This contest is a keeper. Jim (Rolling Smoke) Ferguson and Jim Weaver are both cooks and really know how to run a contest. This one will become a permanent event for us. Great job guys and congrats to all who got calls.”

Ken B. (JayAre-B-Que)

“I really didn't know what to expect from this comp, but I definitely did not expect the reception that they gave all the rookies, all the veteran teams were awesome, Everyone was very friendly, truth be known, this comp will probably cost me a butt load of money because it wont be my last!!!!”

Stefan K. (Shigs in Pit)

“Kettering American Legion Post was a wonderful site. Lots of shade and amenities. Twin Jims and Tina and the rest of the volunteer staff made this contest work without a hitch.”

Jeff N. (Shigs in Pit)

“Jim, a fantastic event with a great venue. Look for the Shigs to return next year. We had a great time with the Toller family and the Cancer Sucks Girls and all the other competitors who came by. Sorry for the tree trimmings we left behind.”

Neil Z. (Big Z’s Fine Swine)

“You did an OUTFARKINSTANDING job with the comp Jim! I turned in the "critique sheet" and where it asked if there was anything you would suggest to make the comp better, I couldn't think of anything except things that are out of your control like the weather and such!”

Tom T. (CBJ)

Jim, you all did a fantastic job on the cookoff. It was a great pleasure to be a part of it and I thank you for your help in getting me in on the judging.”

Todd G. (Shigs in Pit)

“Jim that was a really nice contest you and Jimmy put on. I hope it worked out for you all as well. Thanks for having the Shigs in your backyard, looking forward to seeing you on the cooking trail!”

Mike Z. (Motley Que Crew)

“Jim, hats off to the American Legion! Motley Que had a Great time, were already looking forward to next year. Nice meeting you and Jimmy. Thanks for your effort!”
